The Yorktown Arts Foundation was established in 1975 and has served our community continuously since that time. The Foundation’s roots began with the Arts Committee of the York County Bicentennial Committee, and the Foundation was established and chartered in November 1975 in order to promote and support the arts for the citizens of York County and the surrounding area. Since its establishment, the Yorktown Arts Foundation has operated an art center and gallery to effectively execute the goals of the foundation. Initially, the Yorktown Creative Arts Center was operated from a location on Church Street. Subsequently, the Foundation moved into the former Superintendent’s House, donated by the Colonial National Historic Park, and relocated to a site on the corner of Ballard Street and Alexander Hamilton Boulevard, in the historic areas of Yorktown. From this location, the Foundation operated the “On The Hill Cultural Arts Center” from 1981 until 2003. In 2003, the property on Ballard Street was sold and the Foundation moved its site to 7907 George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown, operating as Gallery on the York. After several years of growing pains the building was sold and a new gallery was sought. Presently the Foundation has acquired a nine year concessionaire lease in the Burcher Cottage, built in 1881, located on Main Street in historic Yorktown and opened “On the Hill Gallery” in the spring of 2014.

Throughout its history, the Foundation has remained committed to its original objectives to promote and support the arts through programs and other endeavors for the benefit of the citizens of York County and surrounding area.

On the Hill Gallery

By operating a gallery, the Foundation provided an opportunity for local and regional artists to display their works. Further, through the conduct of featured shows, many of which are juried, our artists are provided an opportunity to showcase their work for the public, and to increase their knowledge of art through the association with other artists and jurors. In addition to those programs, the Foundation hosts events featuring the works of York County Schools Art Teachers, as well as shows for art students from Elementary, Middle and High School arts programs in the county.
